First Grade Overview

Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” Matt. 18:3. That childlike faith is a fundamental part of the first grade experience. In Bible, students study Creation through the life and ministry of Jesus, paying close attention to making good choices and developing good relationships. Language arts are heavily emphasized at this grade level. Children study phonics, word attack skills, comprehension, and reading skills including the topic sentence, the main idea of a paragraph, sequencing, cause and effect, and predicting outcomes and summaries. In math, rote memorization is combined with critical thinking skills, and hands-on projects are utilized to teach to all learning modalities. First graders cover double-digit addition with and without regrouping, fractions, time, money, skip counting, shapes, measurement and thought problems. In physical science, students learn about matter and force; in earth and space science, they study basic geology, weather, and the solar system; in life science, they learn about plants, reptiles, birds, fish, insects, mammals, and our five senses. An overarching appreciation of God’s amazing creation is fostered in every aspect of the science program. Social science examines our communities -- beginning with our immediate surroundings and ending with a look at our global community including Christian missions work. U.S. history and government are also introduced.
