Sixth Grade Overview

Personal responsibility is nurtured throughout the entire Elementary experience. However, it is accelerated in 6th grade, as students take ownership of their assignments and projects in preparation to enter Junior High. Many subjects are integrated, and various projects are given to allow students to creatively show their comprehension of the concepts covered. In Bible class, the Gospel and its relevance to students’ lives is the focal point. Bible time is geared toward making sure students fully comprehend what Jesus Christ did, why He had to come to earth, what the Bible requires as a response to the Gospel, what the implications of responding to the Gospel are, and how our lives should be completely changed if we are following Christ. Language arts is covered through the Glencoe curriculum – a highly motivational, literature-based curriculum that involves all of the various reading and writing skills students need to be familiar with and master in 6th grade. History and geography focus on the “Old World” with a Christian perspective as the foundation. Math instruction refines what was learned in the 5th grade. Students are taught how to multiply and divide fractions, all while moving on to an understanding of basic algebra. The sciences – life, physical and earth – are taught using hands-on experiments that engage and excite students, preparing them for any science in Junior High.
