SVCS Common Core Position Statement

With so much about Common Core Standards in the news recently, many have inquired about Saddleback Valley Christian Schools' stance on these new standards affecting public schools in California. While the details surrounding Common Core are being debated across the country, our philosophy remains the same as it has been since our school was founded.

Our focus in the classroom is on education and college preparation from a Christian worldview. At Saddleback Valley Christian Schools, we exceed state and national standards by providing a higher level of learning and content; our standards aim for higher and broader goals.  Saddleback Valley Christian Schools considers the state standards and national standards to be a minimum.

Public schools in California are mandated to implement these new standards. However, private schools are in a unique position to use them in whatever way makes sense for their curriculum and respective academic institutions as a whole. SVCS is familiar with the standards and will continue to provide students a thorough preparation for college in all subjects.

While we will not be “aligning” ourselves to Common Core, we will refer to the CCSS to help articulate how we are preparing students to excel in academics, specifically in Mathematics and English. Our curriculum provides students an opportunity to be prepared for future success in a college or university, as well as the entrance exams and other standardized tests that may be required. Saddleback Valley Christian Schools is committed to developing in our students the highest level of academic, athletic and spiritual development possible.

Many private schools do use the state standards as a springboard, but traditionally go well beyond those minimum state standards. This is true of Saddleback Valley Christian Schools: our standards aim for higher and broader goals, considering the state standards and national standards to be a minimum. We exceed the standards by providing a higher level of learning and content within the context of a Christian worldview.
