How Does Your Garden Grow?

Oh, the wonder … the amazement … the joy a child experiences as she watches the seeds she has planted herself grow into something she can actually eat!  Tomatoes, carrots, squash, beans … all of these veggies and so many more … populate the garden of the SVC Preschool grounds.

Each year, our youngest Warriors have the opportunity to tend to their garden — preparing the soil, planting seeds, watering them, and providing the nutrients they need. This hands-on exercise allows teachers to discuss fundamental principles of botany in ways which are both understandable and awe-inspiring to their students.

Gardening is also a great physical development activity, as children practice their loco-motor and body management skills, and object control skills — such as moving from one place to another, carrying trowels, watering cans, and other utensils. Gardening, as a teaching tool, promotes an understanding of responsibility (caring for something), it fosters creativity, and is a vehicle for instruction about health and nutrition.

Beyond this, there are so many spiritual lessons to be learned by exploring the process of gardening. Scripture is full of references to seeds, water, soil, roots, growth, and fruit — and our Preschool staff takes full advantage of every teachable moment the Lord provides. Ultimately, it is their fervent prayer that each of their students will one day embrace this verse for his or her own life: “In simple humility, let our gardener, God, landscape you with the Word, making a salvation-garden of your life.” James 1:21 (MSG).
