It’s OK to Play with your Food in Mrs. Reed’s Culinary Arts Class

At a time when electives are being eliminated at most middle schools, especially in the public school system, SVC is thrilled to be able to offer a wide variety of options to our Junior High students.

“When we think about the type of experience we want for our students, it’s one that will make them well-rounded people,” said Lori Jensen, SVC Elementary & Junior High Principal. “Electives provide a great avenue for students to explore their interests, to try out something that’s entirely new to them, and to stretch beyond their comfort zones.”

Electives also provide a welcomed break from the rigors of academics. At SVC, Junior High students have seven classes each day, five of which are core courses:  English, History, Math, Science, and Bible. The ability to incorporate a couple of electives (which typically have light homework load), is very appealing to students.

“It’s so much fun to watch students branch out and try something totally new. And it’s not at all uncommon for kids to develop a whole new interest or discover a hidden talent because of the experience they have had in an elective class,” said Rene Reed, who teaches the Culinary Arts course. “The students surprise even themselves with what they are able to accomplish. I see kids trying foods they say don’t like or have never tried before. They are learning something that will truly impact them for the rest of their lives. My students can’t wait to go home and try out what they’ve learned on their families. I can’t tell you how many parents tell me they wish they could take this class.”

For the 2018-19 school year, SVC Junior High students are able to choose from 16 full year or semester courses, plus another 7 nine-week courses. And the number of offerings continues to expand with each school year. Here’s a listing of this year’s Junior High electives:
