2 Peter 1:3-4: “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”
How incredible is that? What Jesus paid for in death as a man … enables man to live a life fully in God. Through Jesus we have been gifted with an eternal inheritance that affords us access to EVERYTHING we need, as He has called us into His very own glory (His very nature and essence) and goodness here on earth — right here, right now. Praise be to God!
Every single student has been given “very great and precious promises” in Christ. God has uniquely called and purposed each of our students. Consider that!
As a counselor and teacher at Saddleback Valley Christian, I have the incredible privilege of helping our students discover and take hold of these “very great and precious promises.” For me, there is no greater joy than to witness our students become aware of what they have been promised in God.
In these tangible moments of students receiving what they’ve been promised through the Holy Spirit, I personally get to witness a student’s existence become transformed more fully into the image of Christ. It’s a humbling experience seeing students gain greater spiritual direction, realize their spiritual inheritance, and wield a legacy in Christ with their lives.
A few ways I specifically see this spiritual formation take place in my students’ lives is through the various topics we study and discuss in Leadership Studies. These include: Starting with Why (examining our motivation to lead), Emotional Intelligence, Leading through Conflict, Discovering our Strengths, Discovering our Personality Types, and Transformational Leadership. Leadership is one of the few disciplines that offers students theory, concepts, skills and knowledge that can put into practice right away.
Overall, this is why I love working at SVC. As a staff and faculty, we are passionate about each and every student being transformed by the love and promises of God. Personally witnessing students genuinely experience “ah-ha moments” of what they’ve been promised in God is what continues to fuel my desire to raise up the next generation of Christian leaders!
