Dance

The Christian School for Performers & Artists

On an artistic journey

We Step onto the Stage and Out of our Comfort Zone

Dance provides a platform to express oneself both physically and emotionally. Beyond that, it affords us a means of worshipping the Lord and giving Him praise. The dance program at SVC, “Elevation of Dance,” seeks to establish an intersection between this art form and our students’ faith.

Whether a student is looking for a creative outlet to complement their academic coursework or is a serious dancer with sights set on high-level performing, Elevation of Dance has a place for everyone.

“The most valuable thing the Psalms do for me is to express the same delight in God which made David dance.”

C.S. Lewis

Elementary

We are pleased to offer an after-school dance program in Elementary School. To ensure age-appropriate instruction, two classes are offered – one for younger students (1st – 3rd grade) and one for older students (4th – 6th grade). Emphasis is placed on proper fundamentals and technique. Those who participate in the Elementary Elevation of Dance program take part in a dance recital in the fall and spring.

Junior High

At the Junior High level, students have the opportunity to study many facets of dance in a classroom setting. The one-semester elective course provides the necessary fundamentals of dance technique. Students also study vocabulary, and different forms of dance and choreography. Each day consists of warm-up, stretching conditioning, across the floor patterns, choreography, and cool-down. All participants are required to take part in out-of-class performances.

Outside of the classroom, students may audition to be part of the Junior High Dance Team. The group performs at school assemblies and athletic events, showcasing a range of dance genres, such as hip-hop and lyrical/contemporary.

High School

The High School program places emphasis on outstanding technical proficiency, while simultaneously cultivating an environment where creativity and authentic expression can flourish. Students are encouraged and empowered to push themselves to the next level – whether that means sharpening their existing skills or going beyond their comfort zone to explore a new dance genre.

Classroom instruction introduces the fundamental theories of dance, in addition to the theatrical aspect of the dance performance. Students study various dance styles such as modern, hip hop, jazz and tap, while exploring the unique dynamics of each. Students also create pieces individually and in groups, and learn the value of self- choreography. Each semester culminates with a dance recital.

Students have the opportunity to audition for the Elevation of Dance Team. This group is a vital part of SVC High School culture, and performs throughout the year at athletic events, assemblies and pep rallies.
