SVC has been privileged to participate in the Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. (Scholastic Curriculum Of Recreation & Education) program since its inception in 2005. Holding the distinction of being one of only ten inaugural schools in the program, hundreds of SVC students have benefited from our association with the Ducks organization.
“The program uses the sport of hockey to teach educational themes, encourage healthy and active living, reinforce the importance of positive character building, and reward youth for their dedication to pursuing academic excellence.” (Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E.)1
At SVC, S.C.O.R.E. is used as a curricular enhancement primarily in fourth grade. “S.C.O.R.E. has become a mainstay in fourth grade,” said Elementary/Junior High Principal Lori Jensen. “The program has both an academic component and a physical education component. We take part in both so our students get the maximum benefit from our participation. And they absolutely love it!”
Highlights of Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E.
“Reading is the Goal” – Students log their reading hours over a 30-day period and earn Ducks prizes for participation and achievement. This program complements SVC’s ongoing efforts to cultivate the habit of and love for reading.
First Flight Field Trip – Held at the Honda Center, this one-day event allows students to experience math and science within the context of the sport of hockey. This is accomplished through interactive displays, hands-on activities, and workbook lessons led not only by First Flight teachers, but also by Ducks players and coaches.
Street Hockey Program – S.C.O.R.E. physical fitness curriculum is incorporated into our fourth grade P.E. class and our optional after-school hockey practices. Thanks to a generous donation from the Ducks, SVC has a complete street hockey equipment set including sticks, balls, nets, goaltender protection, and student instruction workbooks. Each spring, a team of students is selected to participate in the S.C.O.R.E. annual hockey tournament at the Honda Center in Anaheim where they compete against other Southern California schools. At the end of each school year, our 4th grade classes compete against each other in our own “Warrior Cup”– a highly anticipated annual battle often officiated by Ducks staff.
Wild Wing is in the House!
Our association with the Ducks transcends the classroom and the playground. Because of our ongoing relationship with the team, their official mascot, Wild Wing, has visited SVC on many occasions. He is often accompanied by John Ahlers, the Ducks’ television play-by-play announcer.
Each season, the Ducks present us with a team jersey, autographed by players and coaches. Walk through the Elementary wing and you will see them displayed. And anytime the Ducks are in the playoffs, you’ll see our students proudly “representing” — wearing bright orange Ducks t-shirts, compliments of the organization.
