Students Learn Economic Principles Early

Throughout the year, SVC 6th graders learn about economics by earning credits and debits while maintaining a class bank and store. “My Classroom Economy” was integrated into the 6th grade co-curricular activities three years ago and has been thrilled with the results.  In essence, teachers create a ‘microeconomy’ within the classroom.  Students earn money for performing jobs like being the class messenger or being the prayer leader.  On the expense side, they pay money for things like desk rental and special privileges.  So they gain an understanding of how to budget, the benefits of saving money, and the realities of decisions about how they spend their money.

In light of the program’s success in 6th grade, teachers at other Elementary levels have implemented My Classroom Economy into their classrooms, tailoring the program to be grade-appropriate.

“Implementing innovative, supplemental programs like My Classroom Economy takes a lot of time and effort,” said Head of School, Mr. Streelman. “It’s doing things like this — going that extra mile — that makes SVC teachers so remarkable. They are wholly committed to making their students’ learning experience the best it can possibly be.”
