Vocal Arts

The Christian School for Performers & Artists

Breaking the Sound Barrier

We are Music-Makers

Hitting a harmony. Composing a classic. Performing pop. Worshipping in wonderment. Abundant opportunities await SVC students in the arena of vocal arts.

Expert teachers mentor our students, helping them discover and refine their unique artistic voice and interpretive skills. Emphasis is placed on finding the appropriate balance between skill acquisition and artistic expression. Beyond receiving outstanding vocal instruction, students also grow in self-confidence, and the leadership and collaboration skills associated with performing.

Regardless of a student’s giftings and future vocal aspirations, we seek to instill a life-long love of music and a fervent desire for each one to use his or her voice to glorify God – that is the greatest “encore” performance of all!

“Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music.”

Psalm 98:4

The Elementary music program encourages students to explore their God-given talents through singing, basic music instruction, and introduction to music theory. Students gain an appreciation for various music styles through the study of historically important composers. They are also taught about the importance of music in honoring our Lord; as such, worship is a vital part of their music experience. All Elementary students take part in at least one singing performance each year. Students may also participate in a choir which performs at various venues throughout Orange County.

Junior High

Music is an integral part of the human experience. In light of this, it should be part of a comprehensive education. This is particularly true in Christian education, which values the human voice as an instrument through which we can honor the Lord. In Junior High, students have the opportunity to participate in the worship band, leading their peers and teachers during weekly chapels and at special events.

High School

When it comes to vocal instruction, “the company you keep” is vitally important. SVC High School students have the remarkable blessing of being led by Octavius Womack, affectionately known at SVC as “Mr. O.” A former touring member and Associate Director of Young Americans, he has performed extensively across the globe, and has shared the stage with other gifted artists, including John Legend and Brian Stokes Mitchell. He is a prolific YouTube artist, whose cover of Bill Wither’s 1970’s hit, “Ain’t No Sunshine,” has over 1.7 million views.

Vocal instruction takes place both in the classroom and on the stage. Each year, the community is treated to three concerts, including one with students performing their own original songs. Students who have a heart for worship are invited to audition for the High School worship team, “Warriors of Praise.” A concert choir course is open to all students and provides an opportunity for them to use their God-given talents while also developing skills as vocalists, musicians and performers. This course develops each student through disciplined rehearsals which include sight-singing, basic theory, and introduction to vocal and choral techniques.
